Breaking It Down : NYC Rollsign in the Works

NYC Rollsign Reconstruction

Work has begun on a new addition to our NYC Rollsign Collection. I’ve had my eye on this one for a while now… and today, I finally got the chance to start the design process.

The rollsign that I’m working on was used in New York City subways during the early 1900′s. So, rather than using a typeface that looks similar to the original… I prefer to reconstruct the original lettering. It’s a painstaking process, but in my opinion… it’s the only way to capture the authentic look of these signs.

Once completed, this will be a 20″ x 40″ canvas print featuring 8 stops throughout the boroughs of NYC.

Custom work is one of my favorite things to do… this is a personalized print that I recently finished up for a customer in Boston (20″ x 40″ paper print w/8 stops).

The Begining : A Brooklyn Rollsign

NYC Brooklyn Rollsign Stretched Canvas

Last year I stumbled across an image of this Brooklyn Rollsign from the 1920′s… it immediately captured my attention, and ultimately inspired me to create what is now Flying Junction. The picture above is of the very first FJ canvas print… and what ended up being 1 of 3 11″ x 17″ stretched canvases that made up the first FJ Rollsign Collection. Featuring Smith, 9th Street, Brooklyn & Church Ave… this sign has remained one of the most popular prints in my shop and it’s still one of my favorites.

First Stop : Flying Junction

NYC Rollsigns

A Flying Junction is a railway junction at which one or more diverging or converging tracks in a multiple-track route cross other tracks on the route by bridge to avoid conflict with other train movements.

Our prints and canvas signs are inspired by original subway signs and bus scrolls dating back to the early 1900′s. We use hand-lettering techniques to create authentic, vintage looking reproductions of the original signs and scrolls. We believe that taking the time and care in our work to come as close to the originals as possible gives the viewer a more powerful feeling of connection with the cities and times represented.
